Over the last ten years theatre maker Jakop Ahlbom has developed a trademark theatrical form that unites theatre, mime, dance, music and the world of illusion. He has a unique talent for combining powerful visual language with equally powerful content.
Born in Sweden in 1971, Ahlbom came to the Netherlands in the 1990s to attend the Mime department of the Theatre school in Amsterdam. He has worked nder his own name since 2000, building up a distinctive and original body of work: Stella Maris (2000), Nur zur Erinnerung (2002), Lost (2004),Vielfalt (2006), De Architect (2008), Innenschau (2010), Lebensraum (2012), Life: A User’s Manual (2013) ,Bug (2014) and Horror (2014). Ahlbom has toured extensively abroad, in Belgium, France, Spain, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Austria, Switzerland, Bulgaria , the UK and the USA. He directed his first opera, Hoffmann, for the Deutsche Oper Berlin in 2013 and choreographed the dance film Off Ground, directed by Boudewijn Koole and starring Louise Lecavalier. Off Ground won the prestigious TV award Prix Italia, the ninth award for this movie so far. He did two guest directions in 2015: Der Prozess by Franz Kafka at Staatstheater Mainz and Men with Hat for Boost productions, a circusperformance. In 2016 Swan Lake will premier, a co-production with ICKamsterdam and The Meervaart based on the classical ballet, with live music of Alamo Race Track.
